It sounds like normal behavior for them (though not for the general population). Some people are just extremely xenophobic. My family is very similar to yours, so I can relate to your feelings. Kudos to you for opening your mind and refusing to adopt their prejudices. Accept that you may not be able to change them, but remember that they can't change you, either, unless you let them.
