Is it normal that my dog does this?

  • My family had a dog that did this. We've always had a breed that is famous for being on the wrong side of any door. If they're out, they want to be in, and vice versa.

Anyway, in the case of the dog I'm talking about, it turned out to be my fault. I used to stand at the door for hours and play ball with her, kicking a tennis ball around the garden for her to fetch. Secretly, I used to aim at garden ornaments so it was a game we both got a lot of fun out of.

She associated being let out with playing (not just relieving herself) and she'd stand there looking at anyone who let her out because she wanted to play and didn't understand why they weren't getting it. Meanwhile my family is wondering why she asked to be let out when she didn't need to be.

The mystery was solved when the door was opened to let her out, and she immediately scooted upstairs and came back with a tennis ball in her mouth.
