Is it normal that my dog barks uncontrollably when i run upstairs?

To keep it succinct, whenever anyone in my family (or friends, depends which ones) walks or motions towards the stairs and start to walk up - my dog loses his #@@#!ing mind and jumps from the couch and starts barking madly, as if I were an intruder. Is he just psycho or does he do it to let out energy? A form of revenge?
