He was making a joke. I hate to say it, but you were much to sensitive if that offended you. The only thing he was comparing to a horse was the sound of your shoes, it wasn't like he said you were ugly or anything. If you cried because of that you are very thin-skinned.
As a guy, that sounds like the sort of thing I'd say if I was trying to be cute, sort of in a flirty way. If you ran out on him when he was flirting with he's probably pretty upset about it too.
