Breastfeeding is recommended until the age of 2. For the first 6 months a baby should be breastfed only and then solid foods should start being added for developmental purposes (i.e., chewing, proper mouth formation, etc.).
After that, it's not necessary for proper development or for a bond between the mother and child. In fact, at the age of 9 that type of bond would be mildly disturbing, since puberty isn't that far off.
