Is it normal that my brother is 6 and acts like a 3 year old?

  • Wow. I really hope I'm misunderstanding this one.

Did you really say to stop cuddling him?? Cuddling, like, hugging? You're saying the solution is to stop showing a SIX YEAR OLD CHILD love and affection?

Part of what is wrong with kids these days is that they are not shown enough unconditional love. Particularly boys. Studies show that parents stop hugging their sons at a lot younger age than their daugthers. Just because they are male, doesn't mean they don't deserve and require love. FFS.

No, I am not saying a child should be allowed to get a way with bad behaviour. However. Bad behaviour is best treated by looking for and treating the cause and not the symptoms. This can be from a huge range of things, it can be a culmination of many things, too.

Potentials I could see for this (irrelevant as this is an old post, but hey, might help someone else who has a look): change in situation - kids are easily upset and scared by changes like new house, new sibling, whatever. Behavioural disorder - it could be an undiagnosed/unmanaged disorder. OP doesn't give enough of the boys behaviour to really go into much on that. Difficult temperament - some kids are born being just a little harder to guide and raise. Other kids are easy.

Failing that, he's six. Six year olds can be little buggers. And the OP is his older sibling. Older siblings get annoyed at their younger siblings. I know that in my eyes, my brother was subhuman and clearly in need of psychiatric rehabilitation until he was about 14. Reality of the situation, there was nothing wrong with him, he just knows how to push my buttons.

    • I think..that he meant coddling. 'Cause that would make soo much more sense.

      • Very good point. My incredulousness outweighed my ability to think of possible alternative words. Thanks. I take back the indignation, but stand by the rest of it.
