So really, it isn't a 45 minute distance. It's two hours. Keep things in perspective. Just because it is possible doesn't mean it's practical. I can fly somewhere in 30 minutes that may take three hours by car. But I never actually fly there.
And they've got to go all the way back afterwards too, so the whole journey is four hours! Four hours on the bus is neither cheap nor comfortable. Definitely normal for the OP's boyfriend not to be prepared to do that.
