The getting "hammered" part of it is strange, what sense would it make if the dinners were strictly professional if they were all getting drunk during or afterwards? Sounds suspect.
Maybe it would be a good idea to ask if you can come along, if everything is on the up and up he shouldnt mind that at all, maybe even be enthusiastic to have you along, if he isnt, then I would be suspicious myself of something like that. Plus it cant be all just "work" if they are getting hammered.
