Is it normal that my back hurts when i eat peanut butter?

I love peanut butter. I've never been diagnosed with an allergy to it and I am fine with it in cookies and such. But when I eat a peanut butter sandwich, I begin to have excruciating back pain for no apparent reason. The pain is such that I usually try to straighten my back against a wall until the pain goes away, usually in about 2 minutes.

Is It Normal?

  • Weird. My arm hurts when I eat almond butter. Too many reps with a spoon from the jar.

  • I know exactly what you are talking about. I don't know for sure but here is what I've kind of puzzled out over my 40 years (and i started getting this pain as a child). Sometimes a small amount peanut butter gets stuck in the esophagus and it hurts because things aren't supposed to hang out there. It takes a few minutes for your body to unlodge the bit of pb. Until its cleaned, it's painful. Small foot particles are normal but pb is rather sticky. You can sometimes speed up the recovery by drinking something.

  • When you cook something, it changes it's chemical structure. There are some things that I'm allergic to if they're raw but if they're cooked, I'm fine.

  • It could be an allergic reaction to something that's in the peanut butter, it doesn't necessarily have to be peanuts. Commercial peanut butter contains many oils. For instance, I'm allergic to some oils (not the type that are found in peanut butter) and whenever I consume something containing them, my upper back hurts - sometimes for days. My mother is the same way.) Why don't you look into organic peanut butter? Santa Cruz's PB is the only kind I've found that just had peanuts as an ingredient.

  • If youre allergic to something don't eat it. a slight allergy can turn serious anytime. I am slightly allergic to crab and avocados but Im not taking any risks.

  • I dunno about your back, but if you end up going into anaphylactic shock it won't be a fun or normal experience.
