As somebody who has been on both doxy and accutane, I can tell you my personal experiences.
Doxycycline will only be effective for a certain amount of time before your body builds up a resistance to it. Most doctors won't tell you this and will keep prescribing it. It also effects the liver which can last for almost 6 months in some people. I went on two courses of doxy - both for about four months. The first time, my acne cleared completely, but that wasn't the result of the meds alone. My acne came back worse when I finished the course. I went on another course, it cleared up my face about 70%. After the second course, I had about 6 months of the worst acne of my life. I decided to go on Accutane as a last resort. I had a blood test before going on the Accutane and it revealed abnormal liver results - thanks to the doxy. I went on Accutane regardless.
The bottom line is that Accutane works. Don't let people scare you off with "horror stories", which are most likely absolute bullshit. Reading through forums about it may make you think it's some heavy drug which will kill you if you don't follow the pamphlet guidelines word by word. It's not. It's just like taking doxycycline, except you'll have to use eyedrops a couple of times per day and you won't have to wash your hair as often.
Is it normal that my acne meds "cleared" half of my face?
