Seems like either the voters and commenters are different people, or else we have two very separate "crowds" here, which is something I've always suspected owing to the same kinds observations you've made.
I think most people (the crass and cretinous majority ^_^) gravitate to sex-based posts, incendiary posts, and obscure/random/unintelligible posts, but the minority of what I'll call "core*" users comment upon the more thoughtful/sincere stories and polls. The core group likes to reflect and to consider their comments before posting. We enjoy healthy discussion/debate. You'll see the same 50-80 or so (probably a vast underestimation) usernames over and over again on the less popular stories and polls. You're just 'one of us' I suppose.
*By 'core' I mean those of us who don't join, post (flame/troll) three times, and quit. We're the people who have been here for years.
Is it normal that many of the posts I ignore get a lot of comments?
