There was a girl in my secondary school who told some very eleborate lies about her friend dying after surgery and her boyfriend commiting suicide in front of her amongst many other things. She didn't tell everyone, just her close friends, suggesting that she didn't want general attention but a way to connect with a small group of people, which could be OP's reason. Yet this girl did also show signs of schizophrenia such as vivid hallucinations, so OP may be doing it for different reasons.
