You should consider taking a class if you're not already.
I was originally self-taught but ... I had picked up a lot of bad habits. Taking a semester of guitar in college (cos I needed a music class for elective) helped fix some of those habits - such as how I held my guitar etc.
Cos practice helps... but you may need to make sure you're not practicing bad habits.
And ... although it may not be fun, don't just try to play your favorite songs - try playing the same things over and over. repetition is boring but your fingers will learn where they're suppose to go. and that's one of the tricks - having your fingers know where to go without having to think about it.
It takes quite a bit of time and practice until you'll be able to move smoothly around the guitar. Make sure you're using the correct technique or you'll just frustrate yourself further. Take it a little bit at a time, like focus on a few chord shapes and then play these over and over until your fingers hurt like hell.
Get a book or a learn to play DVD set, this will help you focus on everything, one bit at a time. Keep your guitar out of its case (if you use one) and put it on a stand where you can see it, this will encourage you to pick the guitar up more frequently. I've been playing for only about a year now, getting a teacher helps, but I've never had one. Remember small steps. Practice makes awesome.
Listen, when I first started guitar (And cello for that matter) I WAS PISSED THE HELL OFF AT THE THING. I've been playing it for 9 years now, and it is absolutely one of the best things in my life. Just take it easy, practice allot, fool around allot too. That's important. Create songs, whatever. Make up solos. Over time, you'll get better and better and it will become easy and you will just freely have fun with it! It will be totally worth the hardness now, so just chill and practice! :-)
