Is it normal that I wish I was a different race?

  • Ah.. White guilt in full effect.

Every ethnicity has some attachment to ancestors who have done terrible things. EVERY ethnicity. Ultimately, we're all human, but whilst we might have to deal with the repercussions of the past, we can't be held responsible for what people long since dead did to other people.

Similarly, we can't take pride in the achievements of people long since dead. Their actions are not our own.

Of course, you might feel guilty because you feel you are unfairly advantaged still, due to your skin colour. This is more understandable.

However, unless you are creating the advantage, it still isn't your responsibility. It's whoever is maintaining a system of inequality. If that isn't you, you can't be held responsible, and - whilst feeling anger or frustration is sensible - feeling guilty is not.

If people at your school are racist towards you, that's their own irrational prejudice. They are being stupid, and allowing them to influence how you feel about something you cannot change is giving them far too much power.

I've heard of people not liking the race they belong to for the reasons you've mentioned before. I wouldn't say it's incredibly common, but it isn't unheard of. You should be aware, though, that every race has its own issues with discrimination and identity. If you were asian or black, who's to say you wouldn't wish you were white for various other reasons?

Here's hoping you one day feel comfortable with what you are and cannot change. Life's too short.
