I work at a Blockbuster Video, over here in Australia. Video stores are closing down rapidly here. The owner of my store has this policy of "last man standing" so now we just sign up people from everywhere, people who come in saying their own local store has now shut down. I have some lovely conversations with people who are still fond of hiring, even people who used to download who have gone back to hiring because of the social interaction, the physicality of it, talking to the staff and finding a movie in their interests. Many say that just the physical visual aid of a library existing in the real world to stroll through is a better way of selecting a film.
Our store has a great dedicated staff of movie lovers and there's a great community vibe here, staff and customers are good friends and recommend each other movies and talk movies. It's this culture which I feel will be lost. I am used to having people scoff at me when I tell them where I work and say things like
"People still hire movies? I thought everybody just downloaded now."
The sad truth is that downloading is killing the film industry. Over here in Australia, illegal downloading is costing the Australian film industry $253 million dollars a year and that figure is steadily rising. Movies can't get made if nobody gets paid!
Working at Blockbuster is a really bittersweet feeling. I often feel like a sailor in love with his sinking ship.
I went to a blockbuster video in Perth recently to sign up but I had no photo ID and they wouldn't let me!! I was very disappointed, and it's hard not to blame you personally Holzmann!! But really, it will be sad if all the video stores disappear....
Wow a local. Yeah man you need photo ID to sign up. That has always been the case when you sign up to video stores. Come back with some ID, proof of who you are and where you're living :)
People steal movies all the time, I felt sorry for one guy months ago with non sufficient ID so I signed him up anyway and he has never returned and because we did not have proper ID when we signed him up we can not track him down. We are a business after all and it hurts us.
Ah that's pretty scummy... it's somehow weird to steal from somewhere where things are rented out... But yeh, I'd say its a pretty cool job working there.
Is it normal that I will really miss Blockbuster Video?
