Is it normal that i want to read the bible for the story?

So basically, I want to read the Bible, but only for the story. I'm not religious at all. It's just that I heard a lot about the Bible, and the story seems interesting. It's the same reason I read any other story.

I'd say there are much better works of fiction out their, but it's certainly a book worth reading. Normal.

I found it difficult to read through. There's lots of lists of people.

Nothing wrong with learning about stuff. Read it if you want.

Sure. Even Richard Dawkins calls it an important piece of literature. It's not really a 'story book' though, more like a collection of ancient documents with different purposes. My advice is to start with the second half of the Bible, called the New Testament. The first four books in this section are accounts of the life of Jesus, called Gospels, which are written from different perspectives. I'd recommend the Gospel of Luke - this one focuses on the facts. My personal favourite is Gospel of John, which focuses on the significance and symbolism of Jesus' life.

I was forced to read and memorise a lot of it when I was young and I really believe that if more people read it, particularly the old testament, there'd be far more atheists in the world.

I have tried to read it as an adult but it's very hard going and a lot of it doesn't make sense, although there are some beautiful passages of literature, for example the Song of Songs and the story of Ruth & Naomi, which aren't about religion at all. As for all that murder and genocide and slavery and sacrifice in the old testament, it turns my stomach.

The movie is more entertaining. And you can get through it faster too.

That's what I did. I'm not religious at all, I just read for the story. Satan always seemed like an interesting character, especially after reading Paradise Lost. I also wanted to know about all the mythology and shit since I've always been interested in that. Also the apocalyptic part at the end. I read somewhere that there are different codes and stuff in the bible that can reveal secrets or predict the future or are some kind of magic or something. Some people say it tells you the year the world supposedly ends. I don't really believe in all of that, but I still think it's cool. Probably make a good story too.

  • Numbers 16 has a pretty cool story. Also, Proverbs has a significant amount of good advice that isn't particularly religious.

Why read it if you can get your tablet or samrtphone to read it for you?

Pick it up and start reading. Lots of interesting stories and you can see where common terms and sayings we use all the time came from.
