Alchemy was the precursor to modern chemistry, from when we had very little knowledge of the elements. It usually focused on finding ways to create gold or silver by mixing other compounds or in discovering the 'elixir if life' or a panacea that could cure all illness.
Our scientific understanding has grown so much since then. If you want to spend your time doing it, that's fine though. But if you have an interest in chemistry or physics, that's a more productive field to pursue.
