Is it normal that I want to hurt people even those I don't dislike?

  • It's natural to cope with negative feelings by imagining another in pain. Some will write angry notes and tear them up after, some will scream into a pillow. Ultimately we have our own methods to 'venting' emotions.

If you desire to cause pain to others who've not wronged you in any way or have something about them you dislike then I'd have to assume you have sadistic tendencies. Many fail to realise being a sadist doesn't necessarily mean you gain sexual pleasure from hurting others, it can simply be one who harms another person and enjoys it, whether it give them a sense of calm, causes a smile or a sense of accomplishment.

You clearly know it's wrong and attempt to control it at times. Psychopaths, while aware of right from wrong, simply don't care. Sociopaths have a conscience but don't allow it to get in their way. Given the fact that you attempt to maintain self control, this leads me to believe you're not a sociopath nor a psychopath.

    • I don't use hurting people to cope with negative feelings. I don't think that what I am doing is necessarily wrong but yes I do doubt I am a psychopath/sociopath as I most of the time control myself or else I would probably never be able to hold a job.

      • When you say "I don't think what I am doing is necessarily wrong" do you mean that you feel those you're causing harm deserve it in some way or another?

        • They don't deserve it but if they think it was an accident then they will never suspect that I am intentionally hurting them and I will never be called out on it.

          • If sociopath/psychopath are off the table then I'd summarise it as simply being an asshole with cruel tendencies
