Personally, I'm more interested in having the abilities of an animal, ie being able to transform into one and back. I'm more for functionality, as long as it's a graceful animal like a wolf or feline. So on that note, I can see where you're coming from.
Unfortunately (having seen such anime myself) I must say that just stitching them on isn't quite enough, as the surgeons would have to get them to connect to your existing muscles and nerves, in order to keep them from just hanging limply, and ensure a proper blood flow to keep them alive... which is unfortunate, as it makes the process more difficult and probably astronomically expensive.
