You seem nice for wanting to be morally supportive, so I think it's normal. I'm guessing you mean 'mentally ill' as in depressed or something of that sort, and not crazy. I'm depressed, mildly autistic and obsessive-compulsive, but I'm not a lesbian. Nothing against your lifestyle though.
