The way I made friends in college was that I just focused on my work and was very passionate about my classes. I never said, "Ok, I'm gonna befriend X and we're gonna be bffs".
People would ask for my help, I'd be friendly, we'd start talking and it flowed from there. Focus on your work, be ambitious, and whatever you do, do -NOT- be gloomy. Be cheerful! A friendly attitude attracts friends but a lonely one breeds loneliness.
It's a self-defeating attitude and will destroy you. Good luck.
