Lately I occasionally go to the 'Hot 100' section of the Billboard Charts and scan through the list while sampling the songs and I can't help but wonder why most of those songs are on that list. I mean, have music listeners gradually become more retarded in recent years?
I've thought the same, but then I think that's what older people have said about the music young people like ever since... well, probably since Mozart or even before that.
Still, I recently came across a YouTube channel where a couple of guys in their twenties - who apparently grew up listening to nothing but rap or hip-hop - film their reactions as they listen for the first time to music suggested by their subscribers, most of which is from the sixties up to the turn of the millennium. That kinda makes me think that the music I liked from that period wasn't all crap. Their reaction to In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins was particularly amusing.
What I found somewhat disconcerting is that these two black guys seem to have no understanding of how rock and roll's roots were in R&B, the blues, jazz, boogie-woogie and gospel. It was also disconcerting when the main reviewer watched a black-and-white film of the Rat Pack performing and correctly identified Sinatra and Martin, but referred to Sammy Davis Jr as "that Indian guy".
