Because they do actually have a purpose. Besides keeping loneliness away, some animals, such as dogs, can be used for working purposes. Breeds like the Rottweiler, GSD, Belgian Shepherd, Husky, Malamute, were all used as hardcore working breeds throughout most of their history and they still are in many areas today. Other breeds such as hounds, Labradors, beagles, terriers, poodles, and some bloodlines of pitbull have all been used in hunting. If you look at the history of any breed really, there is a purpose they can be used for. There are few exceptions to this rule, but most do have an actual reason to be here.
The breed I have are sheep herders used on sheeps farms across Australia. They do a better job than a four wheeler and are more reliable.
Mine are also trained service dogs that do hospital visits and are seizure observers. They can warn owners of oncoming seizures and are also able to detect cancer in patients. Amazing animals.
Yeh. Dogs have served all these purposes listed above, they have also served as protection from and warning of an intruder, or a fire (if anyone has ever been dumb enough to fall asleep leaving something burning). Dogs save lives.
