Is it normal that i think all religous buldings should be torn down?

I for one am a atheist, now you might say, of course an atheist would want religious buildings tore down, but in this case think about it people who believe in different religions often disagree and arguments turn violent and religious people tend to oppress people who believe different, I think all temples churches mosque what ever should be torn down and faith should be kept inside the house, is it normal that I think this, am I the only one who thinks this?

I'm an atheist and I couldn't disagree more. If only because I find a lot of places of worship to be very beautiful. I don't care if anyone thinks that's a stupid reason, some of those buildings have a lot of historical significance and are just amazing (not that I know anything about architecture:P).

"people tend to oppress people who believe different"

And how are you any different to these people? You want these people to be force away from a place that they believe is sacred, which I'm guessing is partly due to them believing different things to you. I think there are some problems with religion, but you make it sound like the buildings are responsible for them. I fail to see how they have anything to do with the negative aspects of religion.

Agreed. The historical buildings have cultural value, if nothing else. They tell us about our past and show what our ancestors could accomplish. That's reason enough for me not to want them torn down, even if I do thinkthat their original purpose is quite silly.

      Thumbs up banana!

I'm also an atheist, and I agree with you, bananaface. There are a lot of awful things caused by religion, but trying to force people to stop practising won't fix any of them.

Caused by religion? That's like saying that the internet caused me a porn addiction.

I like you, but I hate it when people say things like "Science did this, religion did that", give credit where credit is due rather than shifting personal responsibility onto groups and facets, to the people, not to the creation and the institution itself.

No, you're right, it's an oversimplification. What I should have said is "There are aspects of religions that I think are harmful". For instance, I think that the belief that faith is virtuous is harmful.

  • Just because you don't believe in god doesn't mean you should force others to stop practicing their religion. I'm atheist as well but I don't agree at all some of those buildings are the most beautiful pieces of architecture I have ever seen

So let me get this straight.
You don't want us to push our religion on others or talk about it in public but you do not want us to have a place to take our religious mumbo jumbo amongst ourselves away from you? You also are against religious oppression yet you wish to prevent us from exercising our freedoms?

Yes, let's keep it in the home like the original Christians. And let's start inviting our other Christian friends. Looks like we've got a lot of Christian friends here! We need a bigger building! See where I'm going with this?

I'm with ItDuz, let's burn down every building that some group doesn't agree with. There will be none left.

I'm an Athiest and I disagree a million times! Religion is a part of culture and a part of history. What are you 14? I suppose next you propose we burn books?

I also take personal offense to this. I'm from the Balkans, during the war many historical buildings including churches were destroyed. Pieces of our culture were destroyed and you're the first person I met that seems to applause this.

I've lived near a religious "cult" for the last 8 years. Quite frankly, i have a strong desire to burn their church to the fucking ground. The difference? It's not a holy place. A church, other than the previously mentioned, while maybe not exactly "correct" still brings people together and generally gives them a set of morals and principles to live by. It also keeps many (Sadly, in my opinion) in check. The fear of God can prevent many, many things a man would do otherwise.

On top of this being an outrage you might even get on the news what your doing is what the Nazi wanted to do. Therefore I can put you must be a different type of Nazi.

This is a cleansing. You are not going cleanse the earth of religion and if you do it will be a all out war. you think you can stand up to all religions in the world. you think they are going to sit and roll on there backs so you can itch there bellies.

You are insane and you have an insane wish. This is not something you would want. You are asking for the world to be thrown into chaos. I do not want a war like this as it would put most of us to our deaths.

Do you know what happens when you put people to death and when you oppress them? They retaliate and I am sure you honestly would not want to be here for something so horrific.

You must love war since that is what you are asking for this will be our absolute doom and I hope for all our sakes this never happens.

You are going to have every Branch of Christian, every catholic and every Muslim in the world after you if you even attempt such a feet. I think you should leave religion alone because there is to many religious people in the world to fight.

You are looking to start a war and this will be a war. This is not a threat but this is a very stupid Idea you put force. Some things you do not mess with. Some things are too large. You want to attack all the religions at once? Do you know what a bounty would be on your head for this? You would be asking for your own doom.

No some religions are not bad but I think they would be pretty damn pissed if you tore down there house of worship out of the blue. Also I name these religions since these are some of the largest spread religions and would have a lot of power to do something. I would advise against this course of action.

Yeah, I aspired to a spire! Some family moved in, though, but only stayed a couple of weeks. Then a couple moved in and also only stayed a couple of weeks. Then a single guy did the same. It's put me off.

            Good memory, though.

That would be a bad move. That would make a lot of religious people angry, and religion thrives on anger, fear and hatred. Why do you think America hasn't fired a cruise missile at the grand mosque in Mecca? It wouldn't solve the islamist problem, it would just make it worse.

Here's my plan of action: Rather treat religion like all the other legal addictions (alcohol, tobacco and gambling). Make all religious buildings display a mandatory sign that says something like "Surgeon General's warning: Religion kills. Believe at your own risk" or "your faith can harm those around you"

They'll get angry about that, but not enough to make them riot and foam at the mouth, but they'll get used to it. Smokers did. And hopefully the signs will get the message across.

Trying to defeat religion with violence is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline.

I agree, where i come from there's a church pretty much a stones throw away in every damn direction, people are allowed to have whatever beliefs they want but it's disrespectful to those who dont believe to shove it down their throats.
I dont wanna see crosses and signs saying i'll go to hell in every direction i look.
If you believe, then good for you, just keep it out of my face.
I'll do the same for my opinions and lets move on. I dont need or want quotes from the bible or whatever been thrown at me whenever I have to go anywhere.

As a fellow Atheist I see where you're coming from but I can't help but disagree. Sorry, but if anything religious buildings should be kept up because of their cultural significance and beauty. They're not offending each other by having it there, so you should just relax and not worry.

Before I say what I got to say, I'm not judging religious people, just gonna toss a few facts, so with that being said you can do whatever you want.

The whole universe is going through a cycle at this second, Planets are made from dust particles in the atmosphere, practically every day. Earth-Like planets are rare because they contain what we need to live on them.

We evolved from different species, Look at the fossil records. The bible is just a book, a story written a long time ago, parts of it may be true but the majority of it does not fit in today's puzzle.

From a secular stand point, religious buildings are beautiful, historical and full of art and architectural history. From an emotional stand point, one cannot prove or disprove matters of faith and destroying places of worship for people who believe in the aforementioned religions would be cruel, devastating and presumptive.

P.S. Terrorists like to tear down religious buildings.

Can I just ask, is being agnostic essentially saying you're atheist, but don't want to offend people?

Alternatively, you are in between picking religions, in which case, you can't be religious at all since that implies you give them equal merit...

I suppose agnostic athiest is more appropriate. I typically don't call myself anything. I do not believe in god or any gods but I can not prove or disprove the existence or non existence. I have no religion and don't want or search for one. Oh, and I'm not too worried about offending people. It happens

Good to know. So what you're doing is trying to get away from having any affiliation with any group of people who band together and believe the same thing, as that is essentially the inherently racist part of any group. And people seem to think that atheism is a religion although religion is defined as belief in a supernatural god or gods.
          In summary, fair enough.
