  • Considering the men who wrote the second amendment were intelligent, educated individuals (Many were themselves inventors and patent holders) it is safe to assume they could foresee future innovations in the world including the world of firearms. They were probably aware that 300 years prior to the writing of the second amendment Leonardo Di Vinci was designing tanks, flying machines, and machine guns. The problem was getting them to work.

At the time of the second amendments ratification, 1791, there already existed, the Puckle gun, The Chambers flintlock machine gun (the design was submitted to the fledgling US War Department in 1792), Flintlock Repeating Pistol with Lorenzoni Action ( the Lorenzoni system allowed for up to ten successive shots, feeding from a magazine concealed inside the grip. A half-turn of the lever forward and back reloaded, primed, and cocked the pistol.Designed in 1680),the Giordani Rifle (.46 caliber, 22 round capacity magazine repeating airifle adopted by the Austrian Army in 1780)

As to your comment "But, when white trash, inner city thugs, or anybody decides to take the law into their own hands, then I'd like nothing more than to curtail their freedom". It is customary for them to be thrown in jail no matter what methods they use.
