  • I used to suck my fingers. My habit lasted for years and I finally stopped when I was around 10 or 11. I was scared to stop, because I thought I might die and whatnot. I needed to stop, because I was started to become ashamed of it.

I don't know if it's normal or not. There are allot of adults that do this but usually in privacy. It could be a comfort mechanism so, you should try to find something else to compensate for it. I suggest you wear a rubber band and flick it when you start to feel the urge. That or flick yourself to get rid of the need for it.

In the south, people used to have strange methods for it. Sticking the fingers in cow dung or putting hot sauce on them, etc. One of my uncles used to do it when he was a kid. They put dung on his fingers, but he'd wash it off. They burned his fingers with the hot sauce, but he still did it. He finally stopped when he caught doing it by his peers. I think those methods are rather cruel.

I used to suck two of my fingers. They started to push my teeth outward and now my fingers don't really look like the others. My middle finger developed a callus, that took a long time to heal. It's still there, but much flatter and slightly pinkish. The skin on that area has been permanent "rubbed". It's smooth and discolored, the normal features are more towards the side. It's not that noticeable, only if you look hard enough or in certain lighting could you see it. My teeth aren't as pushed out anymore....

There's advice on the net, but it's mainly for children. I'm sure that it could help you too, though.

    Good Luck!
