A tricyclic antidepressant amitriptyline (brand name elavil), at a low dosage is very commonly used to treat IBS pain. Tricyclic antidepressants possess analgesic power independent of their antidepressant action. Amitriptyline is also an anticholinergic (reduces the motility of the intestines), and hence is useful in diarrhea predominant IBS.
Is it normal that I still refuse to be vegan because of this?
