No, you aren't required to. If you do, they might ask more of you but the US military goes through periods of want and wane so they put their feelers out and take who they need at the time.
Yes, Almost all male U.S. citizens and male immigrants, who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. For some reason women do not have to register. Doesn't seem fair or equal to me.

It's not enforced though so it's essentially optional. And nothing objectively negative happens to you if you DO register.
And, it's not 'for some reason' women don't have to register. It's been decided in the high courts that because women are not allowed in combat roles, there is no reason to include them in a draft. Take that up with your congressman...feminists have been trying for decades now.
Failing to register or comply with the Military Selective Service Act is a felony punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 or a prison term of up to five years, or a combination of both. Also, a person who knowingly counsels, aids, or abets another to fail to comply with the Act is subject to the same penalties.
If a man fails to register, or provides Selective Service with evidence that he is exempt from the registration requirement, after receiving Selective Service reminder and/or compliance mailings, his name is referred to the Department of Justice for possible investigation and prosecution for his failure to register as required by the Act. For clarification, if a man is exempt from registering with the Selective Service System, his name is not forwarded to the Department of Justice. The federal law stipulates that names are to be submitted to the Department of Justice annually.
The more immediate penalty is if a man fails to register before turning 26 years old, even if he is not tried or prosecuted, he may find that some doors are permanently closed.
Again, it's not enforced. There is zero interest in prosecuting anyone for failure to register, this has been both explicitly stated by government officials and consistently proven by the complete lack of indictments since 1986.
So? You still have a choice... whether you're willing to bear the extrajudicial penalties or not.
I think the whole debate over this is pointless...
-we don't use a draft anymore, we have an all-volunteer military
-if we abolish SS, all that means is we will have to waste valuable time reinstating it when a major crisis demands it. It's delusional to think compulsory service wouldn't ever return just because we abolish SS. SS registration HAS been suspended before in fact, and been reinstated.
-registering has no negative effects. If it did, I'd respect opposing it but since your life doesn't change for the worse in any objectively measurable way I fail to see the point in non-compliance. And remember the previous point-if crisis happens, your ass is getting rounded up anyway.

Yeah I didn't realize it was the law, I didn't do it for years and then started getting calls.
