Is it normal that i only brush my teeth every few days?

Look, I'm not going to sugar coat it (like I do with my teeth). I have been really busy with med school (to become an orthodontist, actually, the irony of which is not lost on me) and I have been up really late with homework most nights. Because of this, I have not been 100% faithful with my toothbrush, and I often sleep with my contacts in. Anybody else with a life so busy that dental hygiene sort of takes a back seat to sleep and life in general?

  • Man, this has GOT to be a troll post; it has GOT to be. Too busy for an student orthodontist to spend a few minutes brushing his teeth? Troll.

    • I wish it was, but it is not… honestly I don't even think about it.

      • Please. I've encountered lots of people who don't brush their teeth regularly, but none who are studying to be an orthodontist! It's the context, not the act.

  • I've gone with brushing my teeth for a period of time before and it was horrible. Receding gums, plague, bad breath, congealed coating on my teeth. Really, you need to make more of an effort. Especially, since you are planning to be an Orthodontist! I doesn't take that long to brush your teeth! Do you floss them?

  • Doesn't your breath stink? How do you stand the taste in your mouth?

  • Your bad breath will make patients puke.

  • Fun Health Fact!

The same type of plaque found on our teeth is found in the brains of Alzheimer patients. AND poor oral health have been linked to heart disease. Kinda makes ya wanna floss!

  • This wouldn't surprise a lot of people around the world, but Americans are hygiene freaks, so you're gonna shock a lot of people with this. I read something once that said that OVER-brushing can cause dental caries, which might be why Americans have as many cavities as other nations with much poorer dental hygiene.

People with really strong teeth need to brush them less often. If your enamel is thick, you can even get away with weekly brushing. If you drink water after every sugary, stringy, or acidic food/drink you consume, you'll probably never get a cavities/caries.

Flossing alone has been proven to be much more beneficial for the teeth and gums than brushing alone. So if you only want to do one; floss. As for breath, mouthwash does as much good as toothpaste, and there's no fluoride, which, by the way, most people don't know is actually really bad for you, and does almost NOTHING for your teeth. Baking soda is just as effective as toothpaste.

I heard Jessica Simpson rarely ever brushes, and she's known for her smile, so you can count her on your team XD If, however, you do get a cavity at some point, I'd advise you to start brushing, as your enamel is probably not thick enough not to bother.

  • Yes, life gets busy and hygiene takes a back seat because of it. Happens to me.

  • I don't brush every day, but I also don't sugar coat my teeth.

  • Lol. I kind of get this, but come on, it's more of a social courtesy. It's fine to go a few days without brushing if you're not going anywhere (I've gone a lot w/o brushing, and never had a cavity) but it only takes like a minute tops to get the stink and nasty crap out of your teeth at least. as for the last bit maybe i'm not the best to give advice on this matter, I got extended wear contacts and I wear them 24/7 until my eyes start to hurt, that's how i know it's time to open a new pair...
