Is it normal that i need coffee to be in a good mood?

Is it normal that I only seem to be in a good mood or feel motivated to do anything after drinking coffee? I just spent about three weeks off from work for the holidays and on most days I could barely even crawl out of bed before noon. The few days where I was actually productive was when I was able to stumble down to the local Starbucks and have a large coffee.

It also seems to affect my way of thinking as well. I suffer from clinical depression had have been medicated in the past but have since stopped. A lot of times I feel hopeless and lonely but after a large coffee I usually feel less so and much more optimistic. Very similar to when I was on that medication.

I know people drink coffee to shrug off lethargy in the morning, but is it normal for it to help with depression as well?

  • Coffee has no effect on me. I like the taste though.

  • Don't you know how to make your own coffee? It's no rocket science. Anyway, I am the same way. I wake up to 3 little kids and feel overwhelmed until I get enough caffeine.

    • Yes of course, but my apartment is kind of small so there's not a ton of room to keep a coffeemaker hanging around.

      • I was almost too flabbergasted to write this reply!
A coffeemaker??? What world do you live in? There are much simpler ways to make coffee - like a jar of instant and some boiling water! No it won't taste like Starbucks but it's the caffeine you're needing, isn't it?

        • Instant coffee is disgusting, disgusting stuff. And being the coffee snobs that they are, my family would disown me if they knew I was drinking instant coffee.
