Is it normal that i'm obsessed with the smell and textures of books?

Whenever I'm reading a book I am constantly fondling the pages between my index and thumb, and whenever I turn a page I have to sneak a wiff. I just love how all books have different textured pages and smells. The glossy paged books I go crazy for... I'm like constantly sniffing and touching the pages. It isn't like a sexual thing, and I don't get aroused, but whenever I open a book I just can't stop doing it!

  • "Chemists at University College, London have investigated the old book odor and concluded that old books release hundreds of volatile organic compounds into the air from the paper. The lead scientist described the smell as 'A combination of grassy notes with a tang of acids and a hint of vanilla over an underlying mustiness.'"

  • YES. I'm the exact same way. I love the smell of books. I wouldn't call it an obsession but something I enjoy. If it's a brand new book I usually like to feel certain pages against my cheek.

  • Yeah I was like this when I was about 10-14 years old. I just couldn't stop smelling books. I put my head into the books and smell one page after another. Sometimes I just couldn't stop smelling books before I went to sleep. Later in middle school I smelt books at almost every class. I extremely liked the smell of an english dictionary used for our class, I smelt it so much during the class that my classmates are considering me odd. But later I just gave up smelling and turned to feeling the texture of the books. My favorite thing during classes was rubbing two pages.

  • You're a bibliophile, just like me.
And it's an awesome thing to be. :)

I feel like sometimes the smell of the book almost says something to the personality, especially old books that carry smells of places they've been kept.

I need to expand my collection, get more classics. Books are gonna become an endangered species with the donning of e-books, and I'm gonna have a fucking library.

  • I know exactly what you mean. Whenever I opened a fresh pack of yugioh cards I would always crave the smell that came with them.

  • Are you really obsessed, though? I think it's normal, I really like the smell and feel of books too, although I've stopped buying them:( Electronic books just aren't the same, but I think there are more important things than the smell of a book. Plus I've got plenty at home I can sit and smell:P
