I think sometimes, people at one point or another, get a morbid curiosity and check out things like 4chan or rotten.com. Looking at the images does desensitise you to a degree.
I used to work at a medical clinic, and would see a lot of photos from procedures which never bothered me - I found them fascinating. But when I had a procedure, looking at my photos made me feel faint. I guess in a way, if you can't connect certain images to yourself, or someone you know, then there is a certain 'distance' between you and what you're seeing, therefore it doesn't have quite as much of an impact.
