Your subconscious may be protecting you by refusing to accept that the gory photos are of real people and events. If you saw something like that in real life you might have a much harder time denying the reality and therefore have a much stronger reaction.
Well, that's not always true. I mean, you have people that work with dead bodies and mutilated corpses everyday, and it doesn't seem to bother them much. I think it just depends on the person. Everyone is different.
