Why is the boyfriend so far away? If he's in the military I'd say no. But personally what I would do is keep smashing the side piece and not tell the boyfriend. I wouldn't develope feelings for the side piece tho and if I started I'd cut the side piece off. Thats just from my perspective tho and what I'd do.
