In the case of violent criminals prison might have more to do with keeping the general public safe than punishment.
I agree with some of the commenters that there should be no profit motive. This will only encourage them to lock people up for stupid shit like drug possession and other minor offences simply to increase their profits. Maybe a fine or community service are more appropriate for these types of crime.
As for capital punishment I am strongly opposed to it. The justice system is not full proof and you will end up killing innocent people eventually. This alone is sufficient to reject it but in addition to that it doesn't work as a deterrent and contrary to popular belief is very very costly.
