Is it normal that I'm attracted to serial killers?

  • I didn't know those particular details until now, about the specifics on how Dahmer was killed, I just knew he was murdered in prison. Yes, I'm sure there are definitely some mentally ill people in prison, both Dahmer and Scarver seemed like their mental illness was very severe, or else they wouldn't have done what they had done.
I think that whether someone's mental illness will get them in prison or in a hospital depends on whether the law thinks if one can control their actions or not. Someone can be mentally ill and still have the ability to control their own decisions and actions. If the law believes that someone has the ability to know better and to control himself but still commits a horrible crime, then he's sent to prison and not a hospital.
Dahmer definitely had the ability to control himself. His horrible crimes were planned ahead and set up.

    • I agree. But after the 60's they closed most of the big mental hospitals where tens of thousands were sort of warehoused. Ever seen the movie, "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" or "Girl, Interrupted"? Both were set in the early 60's when there were many such hospitals. They still have some, mostly for the criminally insane, but only a fraction of what there used to be. They built more prisons instead.

      • Yeh, I think that they just decided to send them all to prison unless they really believed that the criminal didn't know what was what.

        • Right. Only the truly insane get put into mental hospitals now. At least for the long term. The rest are judged, "Guilty but mentally ill" and sent to regular prison where they give them their daily pills but are treated just like any other prisoner.
