I am bisexual with a strong tendency towards the more homosexual side of things... been in more relationships with the same sex than the opposite.
I just feel that we shouldn't give words the power to hurt us. If we can shrug off that which would otherwise offend us, we show that we are strong and can stand up to bigotry and hatred.
I'm better than a word, and I'm not going to let it hurt me, and I'm not going to jump all over someone for letting the word "gay" slip just because they've heard it in the vernacular their whole life.
Obviously you shouldn't jump all over someone for saying it. But because it's embedded in peoples minds, the word gay is subconsciously associated with bad or stupid, so it could very well be a factor for young people who are gay growing up hating themselves/ killing themselves. I'm talking about young people. It's like a way to bully them insidiously. It's not a big deal, but it's dumb. It was something I said as a youngster too though. My language has evolved since using gay as a derogatory term.
Well I guess agree it's kind of dumb, it just never bothered me nearly as much as it does when I see someone getting attacked for saying it.
It's a little stupid and unnecessary to use the word that way, but it's more stupid (in my opinion) to allow it to make you (generic you) feel all offended and start chastising people.
IIN that I'm annoyed by people who get offended by the word "Gay"?
