It is simply a phobia. It doesn't matter what age you are. Don't worry about it because I still am scared of the dark, too. Remember this: not only do children have a fear of the dark. You can have any phobia no matter how old you are.
Also, being scared of the unknown is perfectly normal. I absolutely hate walking in the dark just because I don't know what is behind me.
