Is it normal that I'm 18 and still scared of the dark?

  • I did the same exact thing at your age. Never EVER could sleep alone without lights on. I grew older, got in a steady relationship, and didn't have to deal with sleeping alone in the dark. However, when my gf was away, I was as scared as ever before. Having our own home, I would lock myself in the bedroom, have snacks/drinks to last til morning....lights on and television full blast. Some years later and today, I walk in the darkest parts of old cemeteries. I sit alone in houses where people claim they see shadows, apparitions, and worse. I caught a head-on view of a human spirit swaying back and forth as I was in bed at a hotel. I made a few non offensive jokes and set my boundaries. She kept her position and I fell asleep.....with no light on whatsoever.

I'm a paranormal investigator. I had a fierce experience with something unspeakably dark several years back. Having to learn to defend myself spiritually literally dissolved my fear of the dark.

My point: facing the most terrible thing that I could imagine ... And having victory (I'm still alive, right?) over it, got my fears in perspective. Many cease to exist. But you don't have to go through what I did to attain victory. Spiritual faith. Spiritual armor. Belief that something divine in and surrounding you will not only keep you safe but shine a different type of light on whatever it is that you fear. In such a way it ceases to exist. Let me know what you think of this story. Longer and more detailed than usual.
