Is it normal that i lack common sense?

I really don't know what is common sense these days. Do you think everyone should aknowledge what other people aknowledged such as knowing the roads when you go driving, remember to have your ID when going to a bar, checking the dishwasher to see if the dishes are clean, etc. I can honestly say that I failed at doing those kind of things correctly. What does that mean? Am I just mentally handicapped or do I just excel in different things so far above and beyond others that doing or knowing everything they know and do is like rocket science to me?

Its been my experience that when a person is book smart, they lack common sense and vice versa. Never met anyone with both. I must live in my own little world. You will be alright. Dont dwell on it

I had to learn common sense. I took everything as an experiment and I tested hypotheses regardless of what people said. From the age of five to twelve, my parents told me I didn't have the sense I was born with. They appeared to think I was stupid.

I just like to find out for myself, rather than blindly follow what other people say (even if it's often right).

  • I believe having common sense means having certain manners that everybody else has, that's why it's common.

You just didn't have enough chores as a child and didn't get beaten if you failed to do them, so these trivial things aren't that important to you.

I can't say you excel above others but you just think about different things.

I'm exactly the same! I've lived here for more than 10 years and I still don't know when the bins are collected! I don't care enough to register the information. I can't cook coz I can't co-ordinate everything to be ready at the same time, nor can I follow directions coz I have to work out my left from my right.

We are all just different and it takes all sorts to make the world go round.

I'll admit that I make a lot of mistakes on a daily basis but It's not me screwing up that bothers me. Mostly it's the people who get on my case about my mistakes like my mom, dad, or friend. Like they can't accept the fact that I'm not perfect and they make mistakes too. Maybe not as much as me but still.

i do lots of things like that and my parents say im careless and irresponsible but to me its just unimportant.

though ill admit sometimes things i do are dumb and careless...
    like sometimes:
i leave my purse somewhere and just trust no one is going to steal it like a naive 5 year old.
i dont put things away when im done using them, like a knife.
i dont lock the door when i go to the bathroom.
i dont clean up after myself and usually wait ony until its unbearable.
i dont turn off the coffee wachine when im done,
i leave the refrigerater door open for a long time,
i let the sink run even if i need to get something from another room,
i put my plugged in hair dryer in the sink (lol thats a bad one)
i let important clothes wrinkle even if i know im going to need them
i leave the house without turning off the tv
i missed the college application deadline because i thought somehow it would get done.
i neever think about the full amount of work something is going to take, like especially when it comes to moving or flying.

yeah i think its because we are lazy and wernt taught these things, or have neever seen them done. so i guess were just going to have to learn someday...
some poeple, like my friends, who have had to live like adults their whole lives think im crazy that i dont know or do these things. my parents both dont work (retired) so have never 'seen' responsility in action. its all my parents fault damnit

I don't believe that common sense even exists. There is nothing that every single person knows.

Yes but it's common, hence the name common sense.

Plus the definition is basically having good judgement on practical matters, where the situation has an obvious solution which the majority of people have the knowledge or experience to understand.

Nobody said that every single person in the world has to know it for it to become common sense.

Common sense is having enough sense to know that if it hurts, you should stop. Or say in a class where your teacher has never asked you to ever double space a paper and doesn't specify this time, asking if you should would be a dumb question because Common Sense says that they won't suddenly change their mind. You, bananaface, put it perfectly. Couldn't have put it better myself.

Ah well, I clearly have a different interpretation to everybody else then. I always thought of "common sense" to mean common *to everybody*, as in something that everyone has *in common* with eachother. For example, I often hear people say "That's just common sense" in a tone suggesting "everyone knows it, how come you don't?". Weird differences in how different people with slightly different definitions of words and phrases greatly interests me.

I agree with joybird as well.
But also sometimes lack of common sense happens when you are experiencing things for the first time.
ie Common sense will become much more easier after you have experienced something a thousand times (ie Driving a car)

I agree with Fawke. Common sense is something that everyone can typically agree on such as, it's common sense to clean up after yourself in someone elses home, it's common sense to always wash your hands after using the bathroom, it's common sense that when you do one thing that pisses your significant other off, the more you do it the more it will piss her off so you should probably stop doing it. Just some examples because I feel that my boyfriend lacks common sense. But the things you listed don't really seem like things that everyone should know.
