Is it normal that i kind of sympathize with breivik?

Maybe the expression "sympathize" that I used on the title doesn't really give off an accurate idea. I'll try to explain. I've mostly been indifferent towards Breivik and his actions (don't blame me, I'm so desensitized to violence in general it's not even funny) and whenever I read about people openly supporting him on online forums I think almost nothing of it.

But recently I read about him liking the Dragon Age games and there's a character there called Anders, looks pretty similar, also blows up buildings and commits mass murder, also believes his cause is righteous... now, I'm convinced there really isn't any connection here, not on any meaningful level. It's just the media trying to pin the blame on video games again. But the thing is, I really like the Dragon Age games and I find this comparison hilarious, when I really think I shouldn't. Also, many people don't like the sequel to Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, but I do, and it kind of made me happy to see Breivik liked it too.

Right now I'm cracking up over the whole DA thing, made funnier by my sister having a crush on said video game character, and even though I don't approve of Breivik's sexism, islamophobia and leftist-hating, I can't really say I hate him for what he did. I know this likely sounds messed-up and retarded (not that I'm ableist), but right now that seems funny to me as well.

Actually, I understand his motives - he just wanted to save Europe from bogus refugees and people with alien moral values. And I admire his determination to do something about it. However, I think that in a democratic country he should have employed other means.

I genuinely mean this to be sympathetic rather than critical, but I think you've been so overfaced with popularity contests (especially on TV) that you're now seeing all things this way. You start off with a reason you like him and finish by saying you can't hate him.

His trial isn't a popularity contest open to the public vote. It's an earnest attempt by a legal system to determine his guilt and what his punishment should be. We, as the public, are out of the equation. What we think doesn't matter. "You don't matter" is also a phrase you'll rarely hear people say these days.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh. It isn't meant to be. It's meant to make people think.

I most certainly don't blame you for being victim to a certain mode of programming. Kind of the opposite, really.

  • I got confused, I know who Breivik is but your post seemed to be a bit confusing cause you went on about video games and a character.

I clicked no though, there's no sympathizing or empathizing with him.

I'm also not sensitive to violence anymore, you see enough of it, fictional or otherwise but that's no reason to not hate him.

He says he would do it all again, how can anyone think what he did was even vaguely right?
