Is it normal that i hear voices when no one's talking?

Ok, sometimes I'll hear someone say something when they really don't. Like, I'll hear my mom tell me something, but when I ask her what she said, she tells me she doesn't know what I'm talking about. It's happened a few times and it really freaks me out... The 'voices' don't say anything bad, but it just irks me. Is hearing voices like this normal?

  • ^Such compassion!

It sounds abnormal but as long as the "voices" are the only thing your experiencing then it doesn't constitute a mental illness.

Ok. So, you hear voices at times, so do a lot of people who are not "insane" at least not in the sense that they are functioning, relatively healthy people. Since it's an anonymous forum, I will admit that I have had numerous experiences like this from my teen years up until the present. If it is not causing you extreme distress, then there is no need to seek treatment, I haven't and have led a largely happy, productive life even though I hear voices sometimes, well actually more than sometimes, more like basically every night, but it doesn't bother me. When one can become accustomed to them and integrate them into their lives, one can lead a much better life and oftentimes find the "voices" to be uplifting or even inspiring. Many people experience things like this, it simply is not talked about that much because of it's association with "insanity".

  • First off remain perfectly calm especially regarding this. If you need to take some time to just chill out in your room and relax. Don't get stressed over this. Chances are it does not actually mean your "crazy". I experience the same thing. I know from firsthand experience (from before I ever took drugs) that it can lead to an extreme fear of madness which can be scary. However, just be aware that you might hear things that are not real and you will be able to differentiate reality from "unreality" with pretty good ease I bet. At least that's how it was/is for me. I doubt that you have "gone crazy" especially if this has just happened a few times. It has happened to me literally thousands of times since I was probably 15, so I see no reason why it should mean that you are mentally disturbed. It has no negative impact on my life and the experiences like this I have had never led me to do anything dangerous. If it is not causing extreme distress (e.g. you aren't hearing voices telling you to kill yourself or otherwise do harm to yourself or others), I don't see why this has to be a sign of insanity or mental illness. As long as you are a peaceful person who is not harming anyone as a result of this or harming yourself it isn't "crazy"

This happens to me a lot. I often will say "What?" when in fact my Mom said absolutely nothing at all. Often times, it will be something related to the topic or sometimes not thus causing me to say "What?". When in doubt simply say, "What?" It looks a lot better than responding to someone when they didn't say anything. Also, if someone ever does call you "crazy" for hearing things just brush it off. Your not crazy, so don't worry about it.

Some are calling them demons but it could also be a sign of schizophrenia. Go check yourself with the doctor. He could refer you to a specialist before its too late.

You need some help mate. That is seriously not normal.
Hope you get things sorted out.

PS: If the voice whispers in a dark, misty way "Kill, kill", IGNORE IT!

    • This has happened to me constantly for years and I have not once heard anything like that in my entire life and never will. Most "hallucinations" are nothing like that at all and for many people it isn't even scary or a problem

  • You could be hearing spirits, or similar. Try meditating to calm the voices, it may help you out. Look up how to meditate in a safe way, so as to avoid calling in something you really don't want there.

I hear people say my name sometimes but nobody actually does. Even if I'm alone I'll hear my name. It's kinda wierd.

Don't dwell on it. If it has happened just a couple times it may be nothing. If you feel healthy and happy for the most part, worrying about it will just make it worse. I am sure this has happened to most people a couple times in their lives. I know it has to me. If it gets worse please see a doctor and get treatment for it

    • This happens to me on a constant basis and I am still sane and have been for the past 6 years it has happened. It wasn't triggered by drugs either, it just happened naturally a while back when I didn't even do drugs and has stayed that way ever since. Sure, it can be annoying, but I am generally fairly comfortable and even if it happens all day like it does with me I would advise against "seeking treatment" unless you really feel distressed by it to the point where it is truly unbearable. I can honestly say I have been hearing things for years and I am ok, despite what some may say all you most likely have is an overactive imagination. If you really do need help then go ahead and get it, I don't mean to discourage anyone, just sharing my own personal experiences with this which is really quite a lot

actually hearing voices means you have psychosis, ie not normal mental state ie not normal.

but are you actually HEARING them or just thinking them and imagining you heard it? there's a big difference. i imagine voices all the time but i cant actually hear them. if you 'hear' it, it has to actually seem to enter your ear and make you seek it's source.

I've heard voices in my head for over a year but after I started taking meds for depression/anxiety they seemed to faid away.
I went off my meds for a while then started taking them again as I was getting low moods again and while I'm still on them I've started to hear a new voice in my head but faintly as if it has trouble getting through.
With the other voice that I had for a year or so I could actually communicate with it and it wasn't a nasty one cause it didn't tell me to do bad things. It feels like a whole person is in my when it talked to me.
I just wish I knew WHY I'm hearing them and why a new one has formed while I'm still on my meds.

u belong in a nuthouse. who gets to say who belongs in a nuthouse anyways? I could say your crazy for not hearing things. If I was in a position of authority and could dictate what was "normal" I could say that everyone who does not hear things sometimes is insane instead of the other way around.

    No such things as demons.

You may have problems with your left temporal lobe. Some times you may hear voices that you are familiar with (like your mothers) because where those memories are stored (temp lobe) can be damaged. This problem may be referred to as schitzophrenia.

I would go and see a doc about it.
