Is it normal that i have had a crush on a video game character for years?

So.. I'm just your average chick. Ever since I can remember, I've had a crush on a very popular video game character, and used to pretend they were there next to me, hanging out with me while I was growing up [Like an imaginary friend. I was bullied a lot in school, so I guess it was only natural for me to have this sort of coping method.] It's only been strengthened over the years as I've gotten older, and has never gone away for too long. I can function as a normal adult, and I have very normal relationships. I write and have written fanfiction about this character and alternate universes/timelines based off of the video game's lore. Sometimes I'll leave my TV on before I go to sleep, and if a video where that character's voice is in it is playing, it will slowly lull me awake. I've cosplayed as other characters from the same series as well. I will eventually cosplay as the character I have a crush on, too. Sometimes, when I do look for a partner, I look for similar qualities that the specific character I like has as well [Like a deep, deep voice or other features] Sometimes I do get lonesome because I feel like I miss that character, so I'll play the games that have that character in it. I have a bunch of collectible toys and clothing and gear that are either based off that character, or are that character. Like I said, I still have normal relationships and I know that this crush I have is on a character whom is not real, and will never be, unfortunately so. As long as this crush does not interfere in my daily life, and I'm still functioning as a normal 20 year old gal should be, is it normal?

Yeah it is pretty normal. I think more people do this than who would ever admit.

It is funny how people post stuff like this and say something about "it doesn't interfere with normal life".
Even if it did, it probably interferes less than an actual human relationship where someone pretty much screws up everything.

  • That is actually a good question. It is sad to know that the character can never love you back, but myself personally I've accepted that, and I haven't let that fact overrule my life. It doesn't bother me really. And to your second question; I know I've seen some people who are so attached to a character that they then become like.. supermega fans of the creator of that character, or the voice actor of that character, animator of that character, etc. At that point, it's almost like someone having a crush on a celebrity. To that person, that creator of that character becomes a celebrity in their mind.

Personally, while I do like my character's creators, voice actor, and etc. I wouldn't form a crush on these people, mainly because they're not my type, and they're probs already married. Another reason being if I did, it'd be very awkward. Like those cringe videos where a guy attends a Comic-Con Q&A with someone he likes and asks a really awkward personal question. The whole room would fill with silence. Yeaaah no. I'd rather just date someone I meet off of Tinder. Lmao.

I'm into Batman but loving a character outside the normal realm is odd. I'm going with not normal but you should never feel bad about your feelings.

  • I am 28 amd identify as a Schediaphiliac. I too am primarily attracted to fictional characters, and have had a love interest in the Ink Demon since 2017. I have had toony lovers since i was 7, but thats all puppy love. I think the longest relationship that i had was with Marik from YuGiOh, and the most profound relationship that impacted me the most was with Wilfre from Drawn To Life.

I consider this an orientation, much like any other. You cannot help how you feel! Its ok! Even if others dont think its normal, it's still really good to be in love.

Message me sometime! Maybe we can chat about it :) do you have a telegram or a discord maybe? Let me know! I'd love to talk to someone with like interests

If you have no objection, nothing. Do what you will with that knowledge, though why it doesn't seem to bother you in the least is beyond me.
