I think that this is a really complex topic and people should be really well informed to make valid opinions. In fact, if anyone just read their own local laws they would understand better.
Usually, it is said that everyone has "equal rights", but that there are also certain groups that are essentially in a vulnerable or disadvantageous position (women, children, minorities, etc). That's why the law has to create seemingly "unequal" measures to ensure that we all end up as equal as possible.
