Is it normal that i hate handling coins?

I have always hated handling coins. I hate the smell of them, and the way they leave the hands smelling afterwards. I also hate the thought of germs they carry.

That's not to say I never handle them, because sometimes it's inevitable. But when I do handle them, I always try to wash my hands immediately. Otherwise I would never dare to touch my face without first washing my hands.

Is this normal?

    • Ah there was a time when I thought you were not the real tommythecat, because you changed colour and the way you typed your username and the manner in which you commented.
But the space you have left between the first part of your comment and the last part verifies you as the legitimate tommythecat.

  • I remember when very young being told by my mother that coins would give me 'canker'. Whatever that is.

Having said that, I think you have nothing to fear from them. Do you wash your hands all the time anyway, or is this purely related to coins?

With the greatest of the respect, this does sound like a concern approaching an OCD.

    • I usually donate my coins to help find a cure for canker. It's a win-win!

  • Do you realize how dirty a bill is? Its not any cleaner. In fact many bills have traces of coke on them. I guess you hate those little machines that give out candy, sticker and rings or those horrible arcade games.

  • you must feel the same way as most Australians. Most Australians hate coins. Passionately. I work in customer service and I always have people paying me in change or if something comes to $23.45 they will give me $53.45 in change so as to get back notes.

We recently put a tip jar on the front counter of our workplace and originally I laughed because I was like "ha! Australians don't tip!"
But it turns out they do because they see an opportunity to get rid of unwanted coinage.

To be honest I can't relate because I always think of that moment where I need change for parking or the like.

  • Coins are nasty! They smell like copper or some shit. I have a similar problem with paper products. Everyone seems to say it's related to OCD :( dammit.

  • Coins are normally more hygienic than notes/bills. Even the polymer (Plastic) banknotes get filthy but like coins, they can be washed.
