Is it normal that i got bullied for being lgbt?

At school, I got bullied really badly because I was a lesbian, and then when I came out as a trans male (ftm) I was bullied even more. Things got really bad and I ended up in 3 psychiatric hospitals over the course of 4 years because I developed mental illnesses as a result of severe anxiety and an identity crisis. I mean, people used to throw rocks at my head and spit at me, etc. I was just wondering, is it normal to get this badly bullied for being LGBT, or was I more hateable than most?

Unfortunately it's pretty normal, depending on your location. In more liberal places it wouldn't be normal but in some places people still do get murdered for being lgbt.

    • Thank you...yes, I'm all too aware of the homophobia in some countries. I guess I should be glad I live in the UK rather than somewhere like Russia :/

Unfortunately it's pretty normal depending on which part of your country you live in. People are douchebags.

    • Very true...you'd have thought in this day and age that people would be a little more accepting of difference!

  • My heart hurts reading about your experience. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. No one should be treated like this for being authentic.

As others said, it really depends on where you live. That shit wouldn't fly in northwestern Washington, U.S.

Your school ought to ashamed for not FIRMLY implementing a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for bullying.

Considering that bullying is a learned behavior, often beginning at home, I think bullies need to be sent to re-education camps so they can be deprogrammed, and given a new lease on life. Punishment does NOTHING to deter hate, it only strengthens the haters resolve to be sneakier about it. Just look at the recidivism rates of U.S. prisons. If that's not a cautionary tale, I don't what is, and MANY of the people in prison were bullied, are bullies, or both. Without intervention, that behavior doesn't go away. Today's child bullies will be tomorrow's perpetrators of domestic violence.

EDIT: Forgot an apostrophe. Don't roll your eyes at me. I'm a writer, and it's my craft. How would you feel if your mechanic forgot to put a lug nut on and your tire wobbled off? A job worth doing, is a job worth doing right.

EDIT #2: Insert string of sailor words here. Corrected one typo. Crickets on a crutch, I need SLEEP.

It's normal but the people who do this bullying are lowlife scum. Unfortunately a lot of people in the world are lowlife scum, look at all of the people who voted for Trump!

You didn't mention how long ago you were in school. If you were there recently like the past 10 years, things should not have been that bad.

Depending on the school this can unfortunately be the case for others too

It's kind of weird because the U.K is fairly liberal. I am saddened by the amount of violence and hate you received, although I myself am straight, I would never prosecute someone based on their sexuality. People really need to learn to tolerate difference, especially in a first world country...

    • I couldn't agree more. I thought that people would be more accepting because of the amount of LGBT awareness teaching that there is in schools and the community, but clearly not...
