Religious intolerance is probably one of the most common forms of mild prejudice, even from people who practice the faith they're intolerant against. I have experience with this, too, but my family is filled with Sunni Muslims from Turkey. They don't even realize that Turks became Islamicized in the 10th century AD, and before that they were pagans and shamans who believed in Tengrism (sky-god cult of nomads in Inner and Central Asia). So were most Christians in Europe today, they were all pagans and idolaters of some sort, so everyone is basically a hypocrite to a certain degree. However, if they feel they need to latch on to some principles in a book that has been edited by numerous persons over 2 millenia, then, that is their decision. Just always keep in mind that you're not like that; and as for your irritation with religious fanaticism, just don't let what they say to you influence you in ways you don't agree with.
