Is it normal that i get words stuck in my head?
Instead of songs, I often get words stuck in my head. It will loop repeatedly and will emerge, unbidden, from the depths of my subconscious. No matter what I am doing, even if I happen to be concentrating on a task, the word, phrase or name will surface in my mind.
It disturbs me how I can't control it. I often don't even realize I'm mulling over the word and turning it over in my mind. Oftentimes, I have no idea how I know this word. It just springs up suddenly and I have this urge to know what it means and it stays with me until I look up the definition, like an itch that can't be scratched. That random information, which I didn't even know that I knew, surfaces also disturbs me.
Yesterday, the name "Mina Purefoy" was stuck in my head. I assumed it was nonsense and that I was crazy until looked it up and she is a character in James Joyce's Ulysses. The day before that, it was the phrase, "Jak se mate?". I also thought I was crazy and making up gibberish until I typed it into Google Translate and it means "How are you?" in Czech. Today it was the word terpsichorean.
Does this happen to other people? Is it strange that my mind latches on to long-forgotten information?
