Yes, it's normal. Try talking to gay people, getting to know them on an intellectual level. Most of the problems I've seen with homophobia is that they are afraid not only of their own viewpoint of homosexuals, but also afraid that gay people will try to hit on them or have sex with them all the time. That's not the case. Most homosexuals respect straight people and would never cross that line. Just try to befriend a few of them and let them know your fears, they could probably help you through it.
