Is it normal that i get emotionally attached to book/story character

Is it normal that i get so attached to book/story character that i start to act like them. When i read a book or hear a history, i begin to feel as if im one of the story character. If its a sad story and something bad happened to the character i usually carry the feeling with me in my real life.I just cant control it.Even if im reading a book and im in the part where the character is going through pain,i feel it and become sad, quiet, moody etc i just almost forget my life and begin to live as the character in the book. Then when i read pass the situation the character is going through my feelings becomes normal again. And this goes on for some times till i read or hear another catching story again. Its really embarrassing, sure there isnt anything called empathy for book or story

  • I feel bad for the character if I relate to him. I don't have to act like the loser in the novel because I already am one.

I feel the exact same way. I don't know if you know the book series Gone, but everyone under the age of 16 I think it was, disappears. I was reading it home alone and I live down a lane with one other house, but they weren't home. I started to think of all the stuff I would have to get together and who I could go to, to work together. This isn't exactly what you were saying, but what you said happens to me too.

I think it's because when you read a book you are completely focused on what's happening so much that you put yourself in the mindset of the book. I bet th same thing or similar happens when you are finished watching a movie, you pick up subtle aspects of your favorite character. You might use one of their words, or walk like them, or think the same way that they do. In your head, some of them has rubbed off on you. This goes away when you watch/read something else. (Or if you wait long enough). I think it's just human nature. It's definately empathy, but also the sign of a good author. Everybody does it.

I totally agree with you.I think you are the only one who really understood what i was trying to put into words.I guess there's no changing who we are then.We just have to live with the feelings. We just have to read good books since we are at risk of being empathetic with them

:-) its normal. I do it all the time. Sometimes I imagine I'm a character in the book who is friends with the one i'm attached to. I also do this with movies, tv shows, and mangas.

Yep. Quite a few peeps here seem to have a fascination w/ Mr. Snape. I will say I like the Harry movies, and of course Potter Puppet Pals. :)

Yeah i like Harry Potter movies too.I specially like Professor Dumbledore and Professor Snape.I've lost count of how many times i read the books.I don't really fancy the hero though i try to pretend to.Its weird i know, people usually take interest on the hero but me? not always.Just like in Legend of the Seeker,i preferred Darken Rahl to Richard

  • Yes!! I can get so attached to a story book character that I sometimes read the book over and over again cause they are so inspiring. I get really emotional...

Same here, I do this too!! Glad someone else does it...-_- Yeah, for example when I'm reading about the circus, in my spare time I'm looking up the national circus school and planning my future....weird, i know. but then i find another character. who can see the dead.

I do this! If it was a book from a certain time, I start talking like it, and my music tastes reflect it. I have to be careful when I read books about mentally ill people or girls who are slutty or overly romantic.

ever thought about acting? sounds like you would be great for it :)
People who can really get into their characters are the best kinds of actors/actresses.

Hmm I don't find myself acting like a character in a book, movie etc. but I guess it's normal!
